Raquel Friera’s intervention at the Ethnography and Folklore Archive of Catalonia proposes a reflection on the archive as an instrument of power. The artist observes that the selected photographs aimed to study people considered subaltern. They wanted to show the mental, cultural and social backwardness of groups that were considered to be at a lower stage of the evolutionary stage. An argument that also justified the occupation of new territories as an evolutionary process towards Modernity, consolidating the idea of progress and the paradigm of evolutionary stages inherited, Friera recalls, from the (social) Darwinism prevailing at the time.

Raquel Friera

Raquel Friera (Barcelona) combines a critical look at the economy with a gender awareness. Her projects are precisely about dynamiting everything he learned in her economics studies. From the theory of gender, he has focused on the issue of work, both in the context of the art world and also in other sectors, taking an interest in the areas where labor insecurity predominates.
