Sandra De Berduccy, known as aruma, presents “Illasamay,” an artistic project curated by Valentina Montero. This proposal combines material experimentation with historical, archaeological, and anthropological research, with the Andean loom as its core focus. Her work reveals the textile as an intricate blend of technological, social, and symbolic elements. By integrating modern materials such as synthetic fibers, LED lights, and interactive processes, aruma rejuvenates this ancient practice. Despite its persistence in Andean communities, this tradition faces the threat of disappearing due to neoliberal influences. It is significant that her work is displayed at the Granollers Tannery, an archaeological site that offers insight into how material culture shapes and narrates histories.

aruma | Sandra De Berduccy (Oruro,1976). She is an artist and researcher, and also a specialist weaver in Andean textiles. She has created an extensive body of work, mainly installations and interactive textile interfaces, textiles sensitive to touch. These textiles are open source technological devices that allow visualizing the energy flowing through their fibers. In her works, textile practices are recognized as technological and by placing the continuity of textile traditions as a branch of New Media Art, she proposes the continuity of these practices with an outlook towards the future.
