Mass dynamics, gender problems, identity, individual and collective narcissism in times of social networks.
Speakers: Ingrid Guardiola, Andrés Hispano, Estela Ortiz, Miguel Ángel Blanca, Mayra Martell and Félix Pérez-Hita.

Workshop description: We are all part of some mass, at least at times. There is no such thing as a separation between critical, autonomous and sensible individuals and what we might call “mass meat”. This is a fight that is played out within each of us. The mass should not be opposed to the individual.

The mass is, precisely, composed of individuals by definition, today more than ever. Accounting individuals, measurable, with their identity document, opinions and personal tastes, of whom they leave their traces in their movements through the networks.

The masses of the Roman Colosseum are not the same as those of the cities of the nineteenth or twentieth centuries (those of Baudelaire or Benjamin, etc.), which in turn are different from the current connected masses.

This seminar will address from different perspectives the change experienced from the masses analysed by Freud, Simmel, Kracauer, Benjamin, Ortega y Gasset or Canetti to today’s masses, connected to their various devices, on the street or from their homes, no less mass than the former. We will also talk about the rise in the networks of identity, autofiction and extimacy (an intimacy exposed, voluntarily or involuntarily), and how issues of class, ideology and gender are raised in some film productions and art since the nineteenth century.
