Facial Weaponization Suite (2012-14) protests against biometric facial recognition, and the inequalities propagated by these technologies, through “collective masks” modeled in community workshops from participants’ aggregated facial data. The result is amorphous masks that cannot be detected by biometric facial recognition technologies.
Zach Blas
Zach Blas, born in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, USA, is an artist, filmmaker and writer. His practice encompasses moving image, computing, theory, performance and science fiction.
Blas engages the materiality of digital technologies while sketching the philosophies and imaginaries hidden in artificial intelligence, biometric recognition, predictive policing, airport security, the Internet, and biological warfare. Facial Weaponization Suite (2012-14) consists of amorphous masks that demand opacity against biometric facial recognition systems.
