This exhibition by artist Corinne Botz is an exploration of a collection of eighteen miniature crime scene models that were built in the 1940s and 1950s by a progressive criminologist named Frances Glessner Lee (1878 – 1962). The models, which were based on actual homicides, suicides and accidental deaths, were created to train detectives and to evaluate visual evidence. This seven-year research project culminated in an exhibition and book: The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death (The Monacelli Press, 2004).
These models built by Glesner served to inspire today’s movies and police series.
Corinne Botz
Corinne Botz is a New York-based visual artist and educator whose practice spans photography, writing, and filmmaking. A sustained focus on space, gender and the body, particularly related to women’s experiences, is central to her practice. Her published books combining photography and writing include The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death (Monacelli Press, 2004) and Haunted Houses (Random House/Monacelli Press, 2010).
