In 1963, American artist Andy Warhol acquired a 16mm Bolex camera and opened a new dimension in his successful career. Among his film productions are the Screen Tests, portraits filmed between 1964 and 1966 that document theentourage of Warhol, the people around his legendary studio, known as the Factory. Warhol dedicated an entire reel to each portrait, about three and a half minutes, during which he asked the model not to move, creating an obvious contradiction between the still image and the moving image. He then projected these films at a slower speed, which pronounced this effect.

Andy Warhol

Andrew Warhola, better known as Andy Warhol, was born Aug. 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died Feb. 22, 1987, in New York.

He was an American painter and a central figure in the movement known as Pop Art. After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became famous worldwide for his work as a painter, filmmaker, music producer, writer and sculptor. He was an important public figure, known for his membership in very diverse social circles that ranged from street-living bohemians to distinguished intellectuals, Hollywood celebrities, wealthy people and aristocrats.

Warhol used different media to create his works, such as hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, screen printing, sculpture, film and music. The Andy Warhol Museum in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, holds an extensive permanent collection of art and is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist.

Warhol’s work, despite multiple mixed reviews, has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, books, and films since his death. In general, Warhol is recognized as one of the most famous artists of the twentieth century, so he achieved much more than what had been his great dream: “to be famous for 15 minutes”.
