The ICONS project showcases iconic images from international photographic history. Cortis & Sonderegger, build three-dimensional models in their studio, in order to recreate two-dimensional images that have taken root in our collective memory. This DIY includes paper, cardboard, sand, wood, fabric, cotton, Styrofoam, plaster, cement, paint and lots of glue. These constructions are then photographed from a particular angle that render two-dimensional images that are strikingly close to photographs of the original real scene. As they say, they take documentary photographs and reassemble them in their studio. But the illusion is always humorously broken by the atmosphere surrounding the familiar image. They integrate the studio environment into their works, including traces of the production process and the instruments used, constantly indicating that different levels of reality are being mixed and that the illusion is just that, just a illusion So the copy of the copy of the copy of reality leads to a vertiginous metaphysical experience that repeatedly confronts the viewer with questions that have to do with perception: What is real? What is genuine? what is true What does an image do to reality? And can we trust our perceptions?
